Web Radios
A web radio is a radio station broadcast exclusively over the Internet. Unlike traditional FM/AM radios, it can be listened to anywhere in the world via an Internet connection. Web radios can offer music programs, talk shows, or both.
The main difference is the broadcast method: FM uses radio waves with limited geographical range, while web radio uses the Internet and can be listened to worldwide. Web radios also generally have lower startup costs and greater editorial freedom.
To create a web radio, you need: a concept and programming, broadcast software (RadioDJ, SAM Broadcaster, BUTT...), a streaming server (Icecast, Shoutcast or a specialized host), and legal authorizations for music broadcasting. Check our "Create a web radio" guide for more details.
Legal requirements vary by country. In the US, you may need licenses from ASCAP, BMI, SESAC (performance rights) and SoundExchange (digital performance rights). Some royalty-free music can be broadcast without authorization. Check your local regulations.
To grow your audience: register on directories like Webradio Media, be present on social media, offer regular quality programming, interact with your listeners, and consider partnerships with other radios or media.
Streaming & Technical
Icecast is a free, open-source audio streaming server. It allows broadcasting audio streams (MP3, OGG, AAC) over the Internet. It's one of the most popular solutions for independent web radios due to its reliability and no licensing fees.
Shoutcast is a proprietary audio streaming technology developed by Nullsoft (now Shoutcast/Radionomy). Like Icecast, it allows broadcasting audio over the Internet. It's compatible with most players and radio applications.
Both are excellent. Icecast is open source, free and supports more formats (OGG, FLAC in addition to MP3). Shoutcast is more commercial but very widespread. The choice often depends on your host and preferences. Both are compatible with Webradio Media.
A stream URL is the address that provides access to your radio's audio. It typically looks like: http://yourserver.com:8000/stream. This URL is provided by your streaming host and should be in MP3, AAC or OGG format for maximum compatibility.
128 kbps MP3 is the recommended standard: good quality/bandwidth balance. 64 kbps is suitable for voice or slow connections. 192-320 kbps offers better quality but consumes more data. Consider mobile listeners with limited data plans.
An AutoDJ is a feature that automatically broadcasts music 24/7 without human intervention. It draws from a pre-configured playlist and can alternate between different playlists based on schedules. Very useful when you're not live.
Vestaradio
Vestaradio is a web radio hosting service offering professional streaming servers. They provide turnkey solutions with Icecast/Shoutcast servers, AutoDJ, advanced statistics and technical support. Ideal for those who want a reliable solution without managing infrastructure.
Vestaradio offers: high-availability streaming servers, AutoDJ with playlist management, real-time audience statistics, MP3/AAC/OGG format support, unlimited bandwidth on some plans, customizable web player, and responsive technical support.
Go to vestaradio.com, choose a plan suited to your needs (number of simultaneous listeners, storage...), create your account and configure your radio. You'll receive your login credentials and stream URL to start broadcasting.
Listening & Usage
It's simple! Browse our site, find a radio you like (by genre, search or randomly with Zap), and click the "Listen" button. The radio plays directly in your browser, no installation required.
Yes! Our site is fully responsive and works perfectly on smartphones and tablets. A dedicated mobile app is also under development for an even better experience.
If a radio won't start: check your Internet connection, try refreshing the page, or test with another browser. If the problem persists, the radio may be temporarily offline. You can report the issue via our contact form.
Consumption depends on the radio's bitrate: about 60 MB/hour at 128 kbps, 30 MB/hour at 64 kbps. On WiFi, this isn't an issue, but on 4G/5G, watch your data plan if you listen for long periods.
